Objective
To assess the clinical efficacy of tadalafil and sildenafil (brand name Cialis) in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) and to provide the rationale for their use as complementary therapies for ED.
Design
Patients with erectile dysfunction (ED) and/or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) were included in the present study.
Patients
Patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) with either tadalafil or sildenafil treatment were also included in the current analysis.
Interventions
Erectile dysfunction (ED) and/or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) were assessed using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) questionnaire (range 1 to 6) as a rating scale of global erectile function. ED and BPH scores were also assessed using a modified International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-EF) questionnaire in patients taking sildenafil. Sildenafil treatment was administered as a single, single dose of sildenafil.
The efficacy of sildenafil or tadalafil on ED and BPH were assessed using a validated IIEF-EF questionnaire (range 1 to 6) in patients with ED and/or BPH.
Main Outcomes
The primary outcome measure was the IIEF-EF total score in ED or BPH. The IIEF-EF total score in the ED or BPH group was significantly lower than the IIEF-EF total score in both ED and BPH patients.
Secondary Outcomes
The secondary outcomes were the changes in IIEF-EF scores during treatment.
Patient and Laboratory Parameters
Patients were evaluated with serum testosterone (T) levels, and the laboratory parameters for erectile function (IIEF-EF, IIEF-EF-R, IIEF-EF-S, IIEF-EF-V, IIEF-EF-U), and BPH (IIEF-EF, IIEF-EF-R, IIEF-EF-S, IIEF-EF-V, IIEF-EF-U) were assessed during treatment with sildenafil or tadalafil.
Statistical Analysis
Patient data were analysed using SPSS statistical package (version 12.0) with the data expressed as mean and standard deviation (SD). Continuous variables were expressed as mean ± SD. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) test was used to compare mean difference of IIEF-EF total score between ED and BPH patients. The independent-samples t-test was used to compare IIEF-EF total score between sildenafil and tadalafil. Pearson’s chi-squared test was used to compare the difference of IIEF-EF total score between ED and BPH patients.
Results
The study included 112 patients with ED and/or BPH. The mean age of the patients was 51.9 ± 14.8 years. The most frequent patients were males (58.5%) and women (39.5%). In the ED and BPH groups, the IIEF-EF total score was significantly lower than the IIEF-EF total score in both ED and BPH patients.
